Michael Lodge, NCPM - If you google family mediation the first and almost only information that comes up is for separation, divorce and parenting issues. Family mediation covers a whole lot more than just these types of disputes. I have been doing mediation a long time, I do some divorce and parenting plans, but the majority is far different. Let me give you examples.
First example: Two families, related together by a mother and a father with two sets of families from a prior marriage. However, the mother and dad lived together for over 20 years, the wife owned the house, the partner paid some of the bills for the house. Now the mother and father are old, one has dementia, and the father has cancer. Both families want the house to be sold but what is the correct split in the funds? Who is making the decision for the mother? What is the value of the house? What has the father contributed to the upkeep of the house? Are there any legal documents in place? Who gets what? This is a good example of another type of family mediation. Second example: Father owns a very successful business, and he wants his daughter to take over the business as he goes in another direction that is close to his heart. Father and daughter have had a relationship where the daughter has been fired from the father’s business several times, but he always invites her back because she is good at her work. However, father and daughter have heated disputes on a daily basis. There is chaos every time a decision needs to be made. The father has invited his daughter to take over the business, but the daughter sees trouble. She asks for financial statements and tax returns; father is hesitant in giving them to the daughter. This a case where I as the mediator tries to mediate a fair solution. Or provide a clean separation at the business level between dad and daughter. Does the daughter even want to stay with the business? This is family mediation. Third example: Grandparents have not seen their grandchildren in three years. Their daughter got jealous of the stepfather and shut off any ties to the grandparents. The grandparents miss their children and want to see their grand kids grow up. The daughter will not answer any phone calls, email, text messages. This is happening more and more when children cut off their parents for any reason, and the grandparents can't see the grandkids anymore. This is a family mediation need. As you can see family mediation can cover a wide spectrum of life issues with families. If you have a family issue, consider mediation to resolve conflicts. It works.
